As I turned to walk out the door, Dawn remembered that we'd
promised to wake
our six-year-old to say goodbye: "We have to wake Sam."
Even as she spoke, Sam stumbled sleepily out of the kids'
bedroom, rubbing
his eyes. He said, "You guys were going to wake me, right?
So I could say
goodbye?"
Dawn said, "Of course we were."
He gave Dawn a huge hug and a nice kiss on the cheek and
said, "I love you.
You're the best Mom I ever had." Then he came over to me and
did the same.
I gave him a gentle swat on the behind and chased him back
into the bedroom.
I tucked him neatly into bed and said, "I sure love you,
little man!"
"I love you too, Dad," he replied.
Dawn and I finished packing our belongings and piled them
into our car.
We said goodbye to the caregiver, Barbara,
giving her our
itinerary and phone numbers where we could be reached. The
last thing Dawn
said to her was: "The kids are not to go anywhere on the
property
unattended. Someone must be with them at all times."
