Two winters before, when we had moved to Millarville, several
neighbours had
complained about wild cougars entering their yards and
carrying away small
dogs and even sheep for consumption. This news had triggered
an awareness
program that all residents had taken and then followed to the
letter. The
previous spring, Dawn and I had discovered a female bear, up
and about in a
nasty mood after a long hibernation, on our porch licking the
inside of
tomato cans but clearly looking for something much more
filling.
As a result, talking to the caregiver, Dawn drove home her
point: "The kids
are not even to go alone to the Quonset hut (one hundred feet
away).
"Barbara said she understood.
Meanwhile, something was bothering me. I didn't know what it
was, but I
walked out onto the deck and drained the hot tub. Levi, our 18 month old,
was a master at getting into things and I had a sense our
home would be
safer with the tub empty.
