Personal Message From the Author From The Heart
As a loving, caring and present husband and father of five, I have simple primary goals -- to provide a solid financial base for my family and to create a loving, nurturing environment for them by being as spiritually and emotionally grounded as I can be.
On April 7, 1999, everything I ever stood for, everything I ever believed in, was put to the ultimate test when my six-year-old son Sam fell through the thin ice of our family pond. The valiant rescue effort and the tragic loss of life that occurred that day has changed my life forever, and in ways that I could never have dreamed.
Searching for Sam is the story that, unbidden, poured out of me in the year that followed this terrible accident. I wrote it initially as a way of dealing with the unimaginable loss, as an emotional journal, if you will. But as I shared my journaling with friends and family, the response I received was so encouraging and positive that I felt almost as if it would be wrong to keep the story to myself.
On many occasions, I have been told that the first two chapters of Searching for Sam are emotionally challenging, and that they take the reader to places some have never visited. The chapters that follow have an oceanic ebb and flow as I recount and celebrate the life of a "beautiful", "wonderful" and "alive" young man named Samuel Jess Johnson.
“I have never before read anything so powerfully compelling, so honest, so courageous, so starkly beautiful.”
Janet Mathews – Chicken Soup For The Parents’ Soul – Associate Editor
I have also been told that Searching for Sam is a book that readers cannot put down -- that it makes them laugh, cry and think. As close as I am to my wife and children, I was stunned to discover that their experiences in dealing with this tragedy were completely distinct and separate from mine -- and completely distinct and separate from those of everyone else around them.
It seems, the way we cope with tragedy is as distinctive -- and universal -- as a fingerprint.
My intention in writing Searching for Sam was to capture a life-changing event and share it with anyone who cared to read it. I hope that this intensely personal experience will in some modest way add to your life. Should that be the case, please drop me a line.
You might even find it appropriate to share or order Searching for Sam for your friends and family.
From the heart,
Tim Johnson
